Well, it turns out I didn’t jinx it after all. At 2:45 last Friday, this cozy little gem became ours. Everyone that knew I was going over to close on the property all kept saying “wow, that was fast!” And while I knew what they meant — that there were no bank negotiations, no short-sale horror story, no bidding wars — for us it was the end of almost 18 months of anticipation and uncertainty.
In late 2012 our friends K&S approached us with a proposition. K was my old boss at the local university, and the underpaid-overworked combo that had eventually forced me to leave was finally getting to her; she was about to begin looking for new work back in Napa and would we be interested in buying their house when they leave? We were thrilled. We’d been openly coveting the place since the first time they invited us over, and had watched, green eyed, while they renovated the attic into a master suite and updated the kitchen. We said yes of course, and then… weeks turned to months, and months turned to a year and some change. K interviewed at a bunch of places, nothing was a good fit, and we hardly dared to dream. I think I probably submitted K’s portfolio to more places than she did, and basically just started trying to will a job opening into existence.
Finally, in December —11 months after I had gotten pre-approved for a loan (may have jumped the gun a little there) — K got a call from a company in Sonoma, and after a crazy four-day interview process they offered her a job. And then, a short week later … they were gone! The house was open, we had the keys, and it was all over but the paperwork.
It still doesn’t seem quite real. We’ve got about two months to take care of some remodeling work before we move in, and we’re not taking any time to rest. Yesterday my dad, my mom and I stripped the polyurethane off the floors and pulled out a lot of hardware, and this morning I did about six hours of finishing work in the master bedroom. I’ll be posting progress here and on Instagram, and using Pinterest to plan/dream, for those interested in following along. This saturday we’ll be banging out the rest of the master suite and prepping the whole house for paint. Let’s do this!
