Earlier last year, a friend of ours sent us some Hinoki bath salts from Kiso Style Labo and ever since then I have been hooked on the scent — and I mean, to the degree that we’ve never used the salts, but I fully peel open the bag and just take a long deep drag from time to time; not quite smoking bath salts, but definitely huffing them. Fast forward to this year, and I’m wearing the Comme de Garçon × Monocle Hinoki cologne, and all of our bath accessories are made of the wood.
A couple weeks ago, Monocle announced their upcoming book release (sure to be pretentious, ridiculous, gorgeous claptrap), and while I was placing my pre-order, I noticed a collaboration in their store with @aroma, featuring a Hinoki cedar diffuser with essential oil to match. So yeah, ordered!
I’ve had it in my office at work, and everyone that’s sat at my desk has suddenly perked up and been like “wait, why does it smell so good right here?” But I will say this, though the packaging bears a disclaimer that the amount of scent diffused will depend on temperature, room size, etc — you do seem to need to be awfully close to get catch a whiff, all things considered. My office is 12 × 14 x 10 and the temperature comfortable, and I’ve got the diffuser less than 18” from me, and I still only catch it occasionally. Which is fine I guess, I like it more subtle, I like it to be a bit of a surprise. I only mention it because if you were expecting something a bit more palpable, well, it leaves a little to be desired.
